Burgess resolution recognizes right to adequate food

The Senate Economic Growth Committee recently approved a joint resolution sponsored by State Senator Renee Burgess that would recognize the right to adequate food. As outlined in the resolution the right to adequate food would include, but not be limited to, the satisfaction of nutritional needs, food availability, physical and economic access to food, sustainability, food sovereignty, and access to water for the production of food.

Food is both a human need and a human right. It is indisputable that every person should be guaranteed access to sufficient, safe, culturally appropriate, and nutritious food regardless of their income, race, gender, age, or status.

said State Senator Burgess (D-Essex and Union).

However, far too many New Jersey residents struggle to put food on their table every day. Especially amid recent attacks from the federal government on food assistance programs and an overarching rise in food insecurity in New Jersey, it is more important than ever to recognize and take action to ensure that every individual, no matter what, should have adequate access to food and be able to feed themselves and their loved ones sustainably.

Under the resolution, every State entity would be encouraged to promote, respect, and protect the exercise of the right to adequate food and specifically prioritize the needs of underdeveloped communities, including the ability of these communities to grow food.
